The Wassaic Project : Summer 2016

BRANDING : EVENT DESIGN

ABOUT
As the 2016 Wassaic Project Design Fellow, I worked closely with the Exhibitions and Program Coordinator and the Design Director to design printed materials—posters, postcards, flyers, and booklets—for the organization’s summer programs and festival.

LET’S START WITH BEING RANDOM
Without any specific prompt—except for knowing that the title of the Summer Exhibition was Appetite for DestructionI was free to explore any concepts. My original approach was to design something purely with type or having type as image. Over time, my concept slowly evolved to include a system of dots—what can I say, I love dots—and that somehow turned itself into a system of modular rectangles. I liked the idea of having certain content occupies within specific rectangle or space. At this point, the design seemed to have a very structured and rigid look for which I didn’t mind. However, “Where the hell is the destruction?” One might ask. Working with The Wassaic Project Design Director, he provided me with some beautiful stock photography of “distorted landscapes?”—they were pretty distorted that I wasn’t 100% sure. With the happy marriage of my rigid design system and typography overlapping with the crazy distorted stock images, I then set out to design everything else :).
